What a great horn section and Midnight Blue have in common

A shocking number of people who are not my own mother watched me change outfits thirty times yesterday. It was the first Y.Chroma Styling Workshop, and it was a ton of fun. Who knew that a small number of sublime Midnight Blue athletic pieces can up-level everything else in your wardrobe. (We did.)

We always have music playing in the studio, and I particularly wanted to share what we were listening to during the session. It wasn’t an accident — I wanted you to hear that music.

Over the past six months I’ve enjoyed exploring pacific reggae, which I’ve also heard called Aotearoa dub/roots. Most of what you heard is Fat Freddy’s Drop. This outstanding Seven-piece band out of Wellington, New Zealand, has been going since 1999. They started as a jam band assembled from members of other Wellington groups, and they’re known for improvising live; the album versions are songs that got refined over years of playing them on stage and in the studio before anyone committed them to tape. Māori musicians, a Samoan producer on an MPC sampler, and a heavyweight Kiwi horn section... NPR once described the result as “Jamaican dub swagger with some Memphis soul in it”. That is spot on.

Look, I’ve always had a real thing for horn sections, and boy do these fellas deliver. Ernie is a song you’ve probably heard at one point, and I’ll bet you smiled and did a little rock head bob when you heard those horns blat out those powerful, simple notes.

I chose that list for the innaugeral Saturday Styling Session. Horns have been around forever, but their simple, dark power to back a song has a lot in common with how a simple, dark color like a deep blue can provide the punching power for a whole outfit — or even a whole wardrobe. They key is knowing what to layer with it — and how much.
