BACK TO NORMAL?

Holidays are over – time to get back to work. The most fortunate among us (and cats!) would say: work and play go hand in hand. Life has returned to our store and studio, and after a summer holiday season that has been exceptionally hot and dry here in Europe, the topic of climate change was very present among our friends and community.

Something seems to have changed: instead of flying to far flung destinations all over the world, many have stayed closer to home, travelled to our neighbouring countries by train or car, explored the mountains close by, or embraced summer in our beautiful home city Zurich. Bike-packing and hiking/camping are high on the wish lists – both are great ways to enjoy playtime in nature with a small footprint.

While this may not yet be mainstream behaviour in western countries, it is nevertheless a positive signal – at least, as no reports of unhappiness inflicted by self-restriction reached our ears. Decisionmaking could definitely be made a little easier, by addressing the absurdity that aviation fuel is one of the few tax free products in many western countries, often making flights cheaper than taking a train.

At QWSTION we are firm advocates of systemic change, but the inconvenient truth is that using airplanes as a means of travel accounts for the largest part of individual CO2 emissions – and thus is the biggest lever we all have to reduce our footprint. Not to blame anyone who didn’t know: emissions are really hard to grasp and understand (let alone see).

HOW DOES IT COMPARE

To give all of you nerds some context: Per capita emissions of someone living in Switzerland were estimated at 13,3 tonnes in 2023 by Our World in Data – this is almost 6-times as much as science agrees on what the global average should be (2,3 tonnes) to stay within the 1,5°C goal set by the Paris Agreement. For comparison, one economy class return flight from Zürich to Bali via Dubai is estimated at 4,5 tonnes by My Climate.

Although our efforts to create everyday carry goods with a lower footprint are like a drop in the ocean, let’s not forget: every drop creates ripples that travel far. So if you’re in need of a new bag for yourself or your kid, check our website.
