Working intuitively with pigment, canvas and wood, Taja Vaetoru draws from traditional Cook Island and Samoan practices, including tapa cloth and wood carving, reimagining them through a contemporary language. Each work forms part of a larger ecology, connecting gestures, memories and expressions across people, generations and distance.

Large black and white graphic painting by Taja Vaetoru.

Taja Vaetoru in their studio gesturing towards a large green graphic painting.

“Taja Vaetoru has only been painting professionally for almost a year, but the stories they tell through their practice are much older, embodying a deeply rooted ancestral heritage. 'When I’m working, sometimes my hands feel like they’ve done certain things before,' they say. 'I feel like they’ve practiced certain actions for longer than I’ve been around.'”
