October 1, 2015, I was diagnosed with breast cancer.

The irony of being diagnosed on the very first day of Breast Cancer Awareness Month wasn’t lost on me then, and it certainly isn’t now.

So when Grace and the Dogeared team came to me with an idea for this October, it felt especially meaningful.

During chemo, I was usually hooked up in a room of my own, surrounded by friends and family who took such beautiful care of me. And each time, once I was settled in, they would head out into the chemo rooms carrying Dogeared jewelry, pillows, fresh bread and whatever else we thought might bring a little joy to someone else’s day.

Then they’d come back and tell me all about it.

Who they met. What they gave away. The smiles. The conversations. Those little moments of connection. I loved hearing every bit of it.

Nothing we were giving away could change why any of us were there. But we learned that something small and unexpected could shift a moment. It could simply say, someone is thinking of you.

I’ve never forgotten that.

And now, eleven Octobers later, Grace and the team want to bring a little of that spirit back.

Every day for 31 days, Dogeared will give one person a pink pearl Wish Necklace and a copy of my book, More than Millions: Finding the Gold Within.

The book includes two stories from my own experience with breast cancer, so pairing these two things together feels especially meaningful to me.
