The 1916 Company Weekly

October 11, 2026

Welcome to the latest edition of the newsletter! The fall events calendar is in full swing, and we hope you'll join us at one of our upcoming watch fairs and Rolex Certified Pre-Owned Road Shows. We've also got all the latest and greatest new watch introductions, a deep dive on the origins of the word "calatrava" and videos from the Studio and Tim Mosso, including Tim's own hands on review of his personal grail watch: the De Bethune DB Digitale.

The 1916 Company In The News

WatchPro: Battle Lines Are Being Drawn In Rolex Certified Pre-Owned. Rob Corder interviewed 1916 Company CEO John Shmerler for this story, in which Corder discusses the pros and cons of Rolex official jewelers who are not Rolex Certified Pre-Owned program members. From the story: "'It is confusing for customers that they can buy pre-owned Rolexes from an Official Rolex Jeweler that have not been through the RCPO process. Addressing this would help to clarify the benefits of the certification process,' Mr Shmerler insists."

New York Times: Do You Really Need A Highly Accurate Watch? Veteran watch journalist Victoria Gomelsky interviewed Jack Forster on the question of the pursuit of accuracy in modern watchmaking, and on the significance of the Dynapulse escapement. From the story: "'It’s been game over for mechanical horology for a long time in terms of absolute precision,' Mr. Forster said. 'Now, that doesn’t mean it’s game over from a problem-solving standpoint. Clearly, there’s a huge market in the luxury world based on the completely irrational, but also very understandable, idea that a mechanical watch is alive on the wrist in a way that a quartz watch is not and could never be.'"

The Weekly Wind Up

Bremont Launches The Supermarine Full Ceramic Deep Blue Limited Edition. In 2024, Bremont launched a complete redesign of its fan-favorite Supermarine, with ceramic cases. The latest version features the same, 500 meter high spec design – and with a new case in very, very deep blue.

NOMOS Glashütte Launches 'Ice Blue' Dials On The New Metro Power Reserve Date, Metro Neomatik 41 Update. The Metro family is one of the most historically important collections at NOMOS, having been the launch platform for its in-house Swing System escapement in 2014. This year, the Metro Date Power Reserve gets a new in-house movement – and a new "ice blue" dial as well.

Moser Introduces Three New Versions Of Its Signature Retrograde Seconds Complication. Having succeeded with the first version, Moser’s now introduced new models in the Pioneer, Endeavour, and Streamliner collections, meaning it’s available across the board in everything but the pilot’s watch-adjacent Heritage Collection. The complication is clearly and cleanly displayed and it is instantly apparent how it works. These ought to do well, and there will likely be Moser collectors who’ll want all three, since each one has its own particular aesthetic value proposition.

The Strange History of the Word ‘Calatrava’. Patek did not invent the word Calatrava. In fact, it existed for more than a thousand years before a simple time-only wristwatch was even a thought in anyone’s head. It has become the Sharpie, Kleenex, or Post-it Note of the watch world: a proper name that has slowly become shorthand for an entire category – and the story of the word goes all the way back to the 8th century AD.

My Grail Watch, One Year Later. It's been 1 year since Tim acquired his grail watch - the De Bethune DB Digitale. He decides to break down the very idea of a grail watch by discussing what the term actually describes. Then, he gets into how he arrived on wanting his own personal one and charts the year in review with it on his wrist.

Vintage Audemars Piguet, Zenith G.F.J., and Watch + Car Collecting with Lex and Perri. 0260 co-founders Perri Dash and Lex Borrero both have spent their lives admiring art and have careers revolving around music, craftsmanship, and authenticity; naturally, the pair also love cars and watches. They sit down with Tim in this episode of Collector Conversation to discuss how their love for watches started, why they coveted watches from the Rolex and Audemars Piguet brands, and how they decided to create the 0260 collector's group. Watch the full video to hear their collecting journey!

Rolex's Most Delightfully Different Watches. Tim is highlighting Rolex watches that might be uncommon to your average watch collector. Vintage Explorer II, the rectangular and moonphase versions of the Cellini, and a specialty domed tuxedo Datejust all appear and are broken down in this episode of The Rolex Review!

Top 5 Watches to Buy Right Now. Many luxury watches explode in price and popularity long after their release: the 2015 Omega Speedmaster Silver Snoopy, the F.P. Journe Elegante 48, Patek Philippe 5711, and plenty more. In this episode, Tim identifies used watches that watch collectors should consider before their prices start to climb. From Patek Philippe, Tudor, Omega, and Breguet: these are the pieces you want to look for to beat the market and pay less.

NOMOS Glashütte 2026: What’s New Since Watches & Wonders. Tim sits down with Ines Hatzmannsberger, Head of Sales & Communications for North America, to discuss the NOMOS Glashütte brand, its watches, and news since they last sat down at Watches & Wonders. From the performance of the Worldtimer, updates to the Twice Unique, new gold editions, and an explanation of the in-house watchmaking; this episode of Creator Conversation has something for new and old NOMOS fans alike.

Panerai Watches: Building the Ultimate Collection. Tim is joined by CQ in this episode of The 1916 Company Podcast where they're discussing everything Panerai. The duo are choosing some of their favorite watches from the brand and discussing what they admire most about them. They also talk about the pre- and post-internet aspect of the brand, their approach to marketing, and where they go from here.

Highlights From Our Collection

For a number of excellent reasons, the Royal Oak and its variants are one of the most successful designs in the entire history of modern watchmaking, and its history and the heritage it represents will continue to make a grail watch for collectors for the foreseeable future. However, Audemars Piguet also has a very deep back catalog, and some of its most enticing watches were produced as part of the Jules Audemars and Edward Piguet collections, named for the two founders of the brand. Here are three that show why, for true AP enthusiasts, these collections may be gone, but they are certainly not forgotten – nor are their exquisite movements.

A Jules Audemars Extra Thin, In White Gold.

If you are an ultra-thin movement enthusiast, this is a very exciting watch. This reference was produced in the mid-2000s, and it represents one of the last instances in which AP used the legendary caliber 2120. The caliber 2120 was the movement that powered the original Royal Oak Jumbo (as the caliber 2121), and when it was introduced in 1967, it was nothing less than the thinnest automatic movement ever made. Today, it's no longer in production, but it remains the thinnest full-rotor automatic ever produced – a piece of real watchmaking history from a bygone era.

A Jules Audemars Dress Watch In White Gold, With Cal. 3090.

This classic design has been out of production since the mid-2000s, but when it launched in 1999, it was at 36mm, and in white gold, the latest in a long line of classically elegant dress watches. This reference is also important in the history of AP for its use of the caliber 3090 – a thin, hand-wound, extremely high grade in-house caliber launched in 1999, and phased out when the Jules Audemars line was discontinued. Its beauty, and that of the watch it powers, remains undimmed; to paraphrase a certain Jedi, it is an elegant watch, for a more civilized age.

An Edward Piguet Tourbillon, With Caliber 2886.

The Edward Piguet line was created as a tribute to Edward Auguste Piguet, one of the two founding watchmakers of the company alongside Jules Louis Audemars, and the collection debuted in 1999, although like the Jules Audemars collection, it was phased out as the company focused on the Royal Oak. This reference, with the tourbillon and big date caliber 2886, represents a long tradition of wristwatch tourbillons at AP – in fact, the company produced the world's first series produced, commercially available tourbillon wristwatch, the ref. 25643, which was for many years, the world's thinnest automatic tourbillon. Although not an ultra-thin watch per se, this reference remains a wonderful example of the tourbillon, not only as a technical achievement, but as an aesthetic achievement as well.

Audemars Piguet.
