The Winston bar is one of our most outlandish commissions to date. It is this breed of project that excites our team the most; eccentric, large scale and a mammoth creative challenge.

This piece was commissioned by a client who had rescued a Eurasian Eagle Owl, of which he named Winston (after Churchill).

DISCOVER

Initially, the sculpture of Winston was intended to be a to-scale objet d’art. Stephen, however, had an other idea: to turn Winston into a free-standing functional cocktail bar tool kit. Who would say no to that?

The solid Sterling silver sculpture depicts the Eagle Owl with his 6-foot wingspan outstretched, as he lands on an Oak tree. The bird’s prey, presented as tools, are intricately hung from the branches of the tree. Then for one final unexpected feature, Winston’s head twists and lifts off to reveal a cocktail shaker hidden inside.

"This piece is a cross between sculpture and the high technique of silversmithing and toolmaking, as well as hand engraving, chasing, and stone cutting – it’s a project of so many parts. These eccentric large-scale pieces for the home are almost a once in a lifetime opportunity."

- Stephen Webster, MBE

We drafted in a master Silversmith, who happens to be very well rehearsed in creating solid Silver game birds; thus was the perfect craftsman for this venture. The workshop is right on the seafront in St Ives. Half way through the nine-month long project, Stephen migrated to the Cornish coast to see Winston coming to life.

From initial concept to final detail, join Stephen as he takes you through the creative journey, revealing the craftsmanship and considered details that came together to create this spectacular piece.
