Amazon is undoubtedly convenient. We get it. And who doesn’t love immediate shipping?

We sold on Amazon in the company’s earlier years. It worked the way it does for all small businesses: Kyrgies was one of a hundred product tiles in a grid of similar-looking products, competing on price and shipping speed against slippers that cost less because they're made in ways we wouldn't be comfortable with.

But it wasn’t right for us. Here are the two biggest reasons we couldn’t stay:

The economics put pressure on what we pay our partners. Amazon takes roughly a third of each sale in fees, referrals, and fulfillment costs. For a product made by hand at fair wages in a small workshop, that margin reduces profit, and worse, it puts pressure on every decision upstream. Other brands appreciate the opportunity to scale. They might find ways to source cheaper wool, simplify the stitching, or find a faster or lower-cost production option. Amazon doesn't care about the supply chain. It cares about your price point and your conversion rate.

We also learned what happens when you succeed on Amazon: You get copied. The algorithm surfaces your listing to competitors. Your product photos get scraped. Lookalike listings appear with similar names and descriptions at lower prices. In the age of AI, we imagine this is all the more true for small companies on Amazon. For a brand whose entire value is authenticity and origin, this felt existential.

So we left. Are we missing out on sales or limiting our growth? Maybe. But here’s how we do business instead.

We sell direct, through our own site and through wholesalers we trust and love, where we can tell you who made your slippers and why they're worth what they cost.

While we do offer expedited shipping options, we’re packing orders with care, by hand, in our Richmond, Virginia warehouse, based on the stock we’re getting in from our artisan partners in Bishkek. Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee free two-day shipping. A couple of years ago, we went ahead and made a bet that it would be an acceptable trade — that there were enough customers out there who share our values and could wait the extra beat to get their Kyrgies in the mail.

Comfort that lasts
