Signs of September

Cheers to a new season. The Autumn Equinox Kyrgies Kit launches next week. In the meantime, a dispatch from the fall equinox in Kyrgyzstan.

Tonight at 8:05 p.m. Eastern, the sun crosses the celestial equator from north to south. In Kyrgyzstan it will be 6:05 tomorrow morning — one astronomical event, dinner here and first light there. And it has ancient significance for the wool that goes into your Kyrgies.

Dispatch from Kyrgyzstan

The sheep whose fleece composes the wool you find in Kyrgies have spent this summer on the mountainside jailoos, the high-altitude pastures where shepherds live alongside them in yurts from June to September. In the traditional nomadic calendar, the autumnal equinox marked the day the flocks, sporting rough, thick fleece, would begin descending, down to their fall pastures, called kuzdoo. This is still the way sheep are farmed in Kyrgyzstan today: This gradual descent, in line with dropping temperatures, eventually brings the sheep to the villages, where they’ll spend the snowy winter and be shorn in the spring before making the journey uphill again.

While cold weather is coming, it's still summer-heat hot, Kyrgyz felter Chinara Makashova writes to us from Bishkek: "We're certainly happy about it, since we have a lot of outdoor work to do, and the weather is helping us keep it going."

In folklore, she writes, the days around the equinox are associated with Umai Ene, the protectress of the feminine spirit, children, and the home hearth. "During this time, nomads performed thanksgiving rituals for the livestock offspring and the gathered harvest. Simultaneously, a crucial craft cycle began with the autumn sheep shearing. Using this coarser and shorter autumn wool, women produced ala-kiyiz felt carpets, renewed the felt coverings for yurts, and crafted warm winter clothing. Of course, many traditions have been lost today. But the herds that grazed all summer on high-mountain pastures do indeed return to their winter stables in the valleys."
