I want to tell you something about color that nobody in men’s fashion talks about — because most of them either don’t know it, or they know it and think it’ll go over your head.

This is weaponized nerdiness. Bear with me — because once you understand it, getting dressed gets a lot easier.

The source code for how men dress is the military uniform. Has been for over 200 years.

Military uniforms operate on a color stack. At the base: natural colors. Black, gray, navy, olive, khaki, white. The original purpose was purely practical — not getting shot. In other words, blend into the terrain.

On top of that base sit the rank colors. These are the colors that say: I’m here. Pay attention. British Green, Aperol Orange, Quartz Pink, French Blue, Italian Plum. In a military context, these colors identified officers. In civilian life, they add powerful color in ways that click.

The ratio between these two color types matters.

Get it wrong — too much base, not enough rank — and you achieve exactly what those camouflage colors were designed to do. You disappear. Not on a battlefield. At the dinner table. In the meeting.

There’s a difference between a deliberate monochrome look — which, done right, is one of the sharpest things a man can wear — and accidentally dressing like furniture every day because nobody ever explained the ratio.

When you see a man who just seems to be dressed right — without trying too hard, without a stylist, without overthinking it — he’s almost certainly got the ratio right. (He might not actually know it. But he does.)

So, I did something nobody else in menswear does — I can’t find a single example, even though it seems very logical.
