OUR STEEL YEAR

Every year we celebrate our anniversary by indulging in food and wine like it’s our last day on earth. This year looked a little different, since Alice had a baby two weeks ago, but we managed to sneak out for a few precious hours to attend the most delicious dinner — a celebration of food and wine hosted by the owners of F&F Restaurant & Bar in Carroll Gardens, the fabulous sommelier Victoria James, and someone we’ve been drooling fangirls of for years, Alison Roman.

VISIT KINDRED BLACK

It was every bit as good as we knew it would be and then some. We snagged a couple of chairs at the end of a banquet table that just happened to be slightly removed from the rest of the crowd. At one point someone from the restaurant grabbed my arm and whispered, “You guys got the best seat in the house over here!” And it did feel like the best seat in the house. Not because we didn't have to chat with strangers over dinner, but because, after twenty one years as friends and eleven years as business partners, we never lack for things to talk about. Shout about, laugh about, gesticulate wildly about, debate hotly about, or sit and brew on in silence for five minutes without worrying that we're letting the conversation falter. That kind of comfort is probably why we've made it to eleven years of Kindred Black at all. When you spend this much time with someone, you have to genuinely like them, respect them, and value their taste and intuition enough to take chances with them.

We definitely reminisced about the past but these days, we're actually talking much more about the future. It's a particularly tricky world for a business like ours, one so firmly rooted in the past and in slow, often expensive ways of doing things. And yet, here we are eleven years in and we still never fail to keep each other excited about the possibilities of what we can still do without changing too much about how we do it. We have more ideas than will ever see the light of day, more craftspeople we want to work and collaborate with, more strange and wonderful corners of history we want to dive into and mine.

Someone told us recently that if you just hold on long enough, eventually you become "heritage," and hell yes to heritage! We dream of a little tiny shop, tucked down an alley somewhere, full of exquisite handmade treasures, where we can spend our days talking to people about roots and plants and ancient beauty secrets and the mysterious power of scent. A place where things feel truly special because you’ll never see anything like it somewhere else, and where no one ever utters words like “optimization”.

For now, that little shop is still a dream, but even in our corner of the online world, there is so much to be excited about. Already deep into the shadowy, mystical season of the year, we have limited edition potions, bewitching perfumes, and magical new jewelry coming soon. The holidays will sparkle and shimmer in a way that you haven’t seen before and the offerings are exquisitely giftable.

So we’ve raised our glass to year eleven and barrel on into twelve. We thank you as always for reading this far and staying interested and excited about what we do. You make it possible, you make us want to stick to our mission and be proud of everything that we offer, and you’ve kept our lights burning bright, literally and figuratively for the last eleven years.
