What Does Your Calendar Say About You?

A schedule is a net for catching days.
Annie Dillard

Hi dear friend!

I’m doing something a little different this week. Usually, I appear in your inbox with a thought I’ve been reflecting on, an observation, something to sit with. Today, I have one idea and one exercise for you.

Open your calendar and scroll back through the last month. There are the meetings and appointments, yes. But also the dinner you almost forgot about. The Pilates class you kept making time for. Your friend’s birthday. The haircut. The train you caught somewhere nice. That Wednesday you blocked out two hours for something that mattered to you.

Put together, all those little entries tell a story about you. What you had to do, what you made room for, what kept returning, what actually got a place in your days. Which made me wonder: what if our calendar is a better autobiography than our intentions?

We say we want more creativity, more friendship, more time outside, more reading, more dates, more whimsy, more life. Those wishes tell us about the life we hope to live, but our calendar shows us the one we’re making time for. So if something you love is missing from your calendar, perhaps it’s time to give it a date.

Until next week,
Veronica Joce,
Senior Editor at Intelligent Change

A Little Experiment

Read the last month, write the next one

Open your calendar and look back over the last 30 days as if you were reading about someone else’s life.
What kept showing up?
What made the month feel full, fun, connected, interesting?
What do you wish there had been a little more of?
No judgment, just clues.
Then choose one thing you want the next month to contain and give it a real place in your calendar.

Book the solo afternoon at your favorite bookshop (I call them dates with yourself).
Put the pasta cooking class in.
Block two hours to write something nobody asked you to write.
Plan the dinner with someone you miss.
Leave Saturday morning empty for wandering around a neighborhood you’ve never properly explored.

Give it a date and some space. Make it part of your story. Your calendar does more than record your life – it leaves blank squares for you to fill.

Let’s keep talking. Leave your question here

Where plans meet memories

If this experiment made you want to be more intentional with your time, our Productivity Planner + Five Minute Journal duo brings both sides together.

The Productivity Planner gives your intentions somewhere to go. Inside, you’ll find a framework, calendar, and daily schedules where you can block out the hours for what matters to you (and they don’t have to be filled with work). Then there is the Five Minute Journal: a place to notice what happened once you made that room. The small wins, the people, the ordinary afternoons, the moments you want to remember instead of letting another month blur past.
