The Dark Blue That Is Chic, Instead Of Boring

Frank Sinatra understood midnight blue. He wore midnight-blue dinner suits on screen and on stage, and a famous rule attributed to him allowed only one kind of blue after sundown: midnight blue.

There was a practical reason for the exception. Under the warm artificial lighting of the period, midnight blue could appear deeper - even blacker - than black. On camera, it retained enough tonal variation to reveal the shape and detail of the tailoring.

Then, in 1962, audiences met Sean Connery’s James Bond at a casino table in Dr. No, dressed in a midnight-blue dinner suit (you might think of it as a tuxedo) tailored by Anthony Sinclair. I’d love to give Connery credit for the choice, but much of Bond’s original look was shaped by the film’s director, Terence Young, working with his own tailor, Sinclair.

In natural light, the suit’s blue character became more apparent. Under evening lights and on film, it acquired extraordinary depth.
