The Asian Steppe has its own Olympic games — and they start Monday

World Nomad Games 2026, commence

The World Nomad Games started in Kyrgyzstan in 2014, on the premise that the sports of the Asian Steppe deserved their own global stage. After editions in Türkiye in 2022 and Kazakhstan in 2024, the Games are coming home.

The sixth edition opens in Bishkek this Monday August 31 and closes on the shore of Lake Issyk-Kul (the world’s deepest high-altitude lake!) on September 6. Delegations from nearly 90 countries are set to compete.

Here is what the athletes are competing in.

Kok boru — the main event. Two teams on horseback carry a goat carcass, now often a synthetic substitute, down a field and into the opposing goal. Rugby at a gallop.

Er enish — horseback wrestling. Two riders take hold of each other and try to pull the other out of the saddle. First one on the ground loses.

Salbuurun — traditional hunting, shown in three parts: golden eagles, taigan sighthounds, and the bow.

At chabysh — long-distance horse racing.

Toguz korgool — a counting game played with stones on a carved wooden board, in the same family as mancala. This is the one event you can win sitting down.

Ordo — players flick sheep knucklebones across a circle, aiming to knock out the piece that stands for the khan.

And in the Kyrchyn Gorge, above Issyk-Kul, organizers are already at work raising an ethno-village of several hundred yurts for the week.

If you made the trip, you'd see felt-makers working out in the open and Manaschi bards reciting a 500,000-line epic poem from memory.

We are having extreme FOMO thinking about it and will trust that the artisans in Bishkek who make your Kyrgies report back.

The Games are upon us. We'll be marking the occasion here! Keep an eye out.
