The Best Show Starts After Dark

The nights are getting long again, the bugs are finally going away, and the nights are still warm enough to enjoy being outside.

Find the Dark

Most of Us Have Never Really Seen It

One highway lit up on the horizon is enough to wash out the whole sky. Getting away from that is the entire trick, and an RV is how you stay somewhere that remote and still sleep in a bed. Four places where it actually goes black:

Headlands, Michigan

On the northern shoreline of Lake Michigan, with a Dark Sky Discovery Trail and dazzling views of Orion and the Milky Way. The northern lights have turned up here more than once. RV camping is limited, so book early.

Glacier National Park

It does not get much more remote. The mountains that tower over you all day get swallowed by the blackness, and the stars come back at you off the lakes.

Grand Canyon National Park

Everyone goes for the daylight view. Staying the night gets you a completely different one, and the rim campgrounds put you right there for it.

Somewhere Closer Than You Think

Certified dark sky parks exist in nearly every region of the country, not just the desert southwest. The nearest one is probably a weekend, not an expedition.

Time It Right

A Full Moon Will Ruin a Perfect Night

You can drive eight hours to the darkest sky in the country and see almost nothing, purely because of when you showed up. Four things worth checking before you pick your dates:

Book Around the New Moon

The sky is darkest when the moon is out of the way. Pull up a new moon calendar first and pick your dates from that, then find the rig.

Watch the Forecast, Not the Season

Clear and cold beats mild and hazy every time. Check conditions for the specific nights you will be there, not the month.

Ask at the Visitor Center

Most of these parks run astronomy workshops, night hikes, astrophotography sessions, and moon events. It costs nothing to ask, and it is usually the best part of the trip.

Kill Your Own Lights

Your eyes need about twenty minutes to adjust, and one porch light undoes it for everybody. Switch the exterior lights off, keep a red flashlight handy, and let the campsite go dark.
