What's behind ZBiotics Pre-Alcohol™?

Hi there, it's Bentley from ZBiotics!

Have you ever wondered what's actually in that bottle of Pre-Alcohol sitting on your bar cart?

Pre-Alcohol isn't a mix of vitamins, herbs, or other common supplement ingredients. At the center of it is Bacillus subtilis ZB183™, a genetically engineered probiotic we created to do one specific job in the gut: break down acetaldehyde.

When you drink alcohol, your body produces acetaldehyde, an unwanted byproduct of alcohol metabolism. Your liver is well-equipped to clear it, but acetaldehyde can also be produced in the gut, where there's much less capacity to break it down.

That's where ZB183™ comes in.

Using genetic engineering, we gave ZB183™ the instructions to produce an enzyme that breaks down acetaldehyde. Once active in the gut, ZB183™ is designed to produce that enzyme and help break down acetaldehyde in the gut.

Learn more about the science

Built for a specific job

We already liked a lot about B. subtilis: it has a long history of safe use, people consume it in foods and probiotics every day, and it doesn't stick around in the gut.

With ZB183™, we built on those traits by engineering it to perform a specific function.

That's really the idea behind Pre-Alcohol. Instead of relying only on what a probiotic already does naturally, genetic engineering gives us a way to design a probiotic around a specific job.

ZB183™ was the first probiotic we developed using this approach and the first example of our broader vision for what genetically engineered probiotics can do.

Thanks for learning,
