The winners of the Hasselblad Masters 2026 have been unveiled. Some of them remind us that compelling imagery isn’t just about finding the right light, but actively sculpting it. We share their visions and lighting techniques to inspire how you shape your next frame.

Painting Architecture with Handheld Beams

Kevin Boyle, Winner of Architecture Category

These abandoned prairie halls appear to be glowing from the inside out, but they were photographed in absolute blackness. Kevin Boyle walked through the silent ruins, painting every part of the building piece by piece with a simple flashlight. Layered together, simple hand-lit exposures turn hollowed spaces into glowing tributes to community memory.

Sculpting Contours with Diffused Backlight

Panitbhand Paribatra Na Ayudhya, Winner of Project//21 Category

Instead of firing a bright flash that would flatten fragile marine life against the black ocean, Panitbhand hid a warm, diffused beam behind a ribbon eel. Paired with a slow shutter to capture the gentle drift, the backlight catches the translucent edges—sculpting a glowing silhouette out of the deep.

Carving Warm Light Through the Mist

Gosse Bouma, Winner of Street Category

The blue mist of early morning easily makes a city feel cold and distant. Rather than fighting that emptiness, Gosse Bouma framed a single street kiosk lit with warm amber light from within. That single pocket of warmth anchors the entire frame, giving the cool morning street an unhurried, human heartbeat.
